The Edingtons will be uniquely placed to view a wonderful range of sea creatures at first hand... |
...and to experience the devastation of marine pollution worldwide...Most of us have to visit sea life parks such as Seaworld and aquariums to see dolphins, porpoises, whales, seals and all manner of sea birds. There are many glorious sights that Peter and his family can look forward to on their long voyage. |
But the crew of Loquax will not just be whale-watching. For Southampton University's Department of Oceanography the Edingtons will be collecting information and sending back photographs of specific sea areas to monitor any changes.
It's not just driftwood and coconuts that are being washed up on beaches anymore; it's flip-flops, plastic bags, coke cans and worse. The Marine Conservation Society have asked Peter to engage in some garbage analysis as part of their ongoing Ocean Vigil and Beach Watch schemes. The Marine Conservation Society is the only UK charity devoted solely to protecting the marine environment - for wildlife and for future generations. They work through campaigning, education and persuasion, always based on sound research and try to involve people in the care and protection of the sea and its wildlife. If the health of the marine environment and the decline in marine wildlife concerns you, then get involved with the Marine Conservation Society and do your bit!

For Manchester Metropolitan University's Atmospheric Research Institute, Peter will be monitoring levels of volatile organic compounds in the various ocean regions on his route, collecting data about air quality at distances offshore.
Loquax will not only be spending time offshore, but much of the inshore time will be spent in extremely isolated areas of reefs, atolls and lagoons where a whole host of different species can be observed. Peter will be sending images back via the satellite link to the pictures page on this website taken with his Agfa digital camera, the latest picture displayed. All previous pictures are archived, very accessibly in date order.
