13 million households depend on growing and selling crops, mainly wheat or rice. But India produces wheat, and Vietnam rice, more cheaply than Bangladesh. If Bangladesh was forced to liberalize agricultural trade, most of these 13 million households would have to revert to subsistence farming. Bangladesh could not employ such large numbers of displaced farmers in other sectors of its economy. |
