Indebted nations have been forced to reduce their spending on health and education. In many of the countries in which the World Bank and IMF of work, people must now pay for these services. The results are catastrophic. In Ghana the new fees forced two thirds of rural families to stop sending their children to school ... the cuts in health spending the Bank and IMF forced on Zambia helped to increase infant mortality from 97 deaths per 1000 births in 1980 to 202 deaths per 1000 in 1999 (Mark Lynas 19 October 1999 – Daily Mail & Guardian Johannesburg). |
