After years of
dreaming and months of careful planning, the Edington family left
Plymouth on Tuesday 18 August 1998 for a 15 month long voyage around the
world to Australia sailing in a boat called Loquax, which they built
with their own hands. The purpose of this website is, in some
small way, to share the journey with them.

During the first part of their voyage, the Edingtons delivered much-needed aid to projects in The Gambia supported by Sight Savers International, the UK's leading charity combating blindness in developing countries. When they reached The Gambia on 4 November 1998, they arrived co-incidentally during The Gambia's first ever National Prevention of Blindness Week. The Edingtons delivered equipment directly to eye-surgeons waiting to carry out vital sight-restoring operations. See the Daily Mail press release
Loquax will also be flying the flag for other charities too, including Book Aid International and the UK Foundation for the South Pacific. For details of marine charities, please go to the Marine Ecology page.
