Competent Crew course

At the end of this course, student's should be able to do the following

Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat, rigging and sail

Sufficient knowledge to understand orders given concerning the sailing and day-to-day  running of the boat

Sail Handling

Bending on setting, reefing and handing of sails

Ropework

Handling ropes including coiling, stowing, securing to cleats and single and double bollards

Handling warps

Ability to tie and know how to use:-

Bowlines, Round turn and two half hitches, single and double sheetbends, reef knots

Fire Precautions and Fire fighting

Awareness of the hazards of fire and the precautions necessary to prevent fire.

Knows action to be taken in the event of fire

Personal Safety Equipment

Understands and complies with rules for the wearing of safety harnesses and personal buoyancy aids

Man Overboard

Understands action to be taken to recover a man overboard

Distress Signals

Can operate distress flares and knows on what occasion to use them

Rules of the Road

Is able to keep an efficient lookout at sea

Dinghies

Understands and complies with loading rules and is able to handle a dinghy under oars and motor

Meteorology

Is aware of forecasting services and understands weather forecasting information

Sea-sickness

Working efficiency when affected by sea-sickness

Helming and sailing

Understands the basic theory of sailing and can steer and trim sails on all points of sailing.

Can steer a compass course under sail and power

Engines

Is able to stop and carry out simple checks on the owner serviceable parts and systems of an inboard and an outboard 

Artificial Resuscitation and First Aid
