out course to steer to allow for tidal streams, leeway and drift
Maintenance
of navigational records

of echo sounder and lead line
Meteorology
Knows
sources of forecast information,
Can
interpret forecast and use barometer as a forecasting aid
Rules
of the Road
Has
a working knowledge of the international regulation for the prevention
of collisions at sea
Maintenance
and repair work
Understands
and is able to undertake maintenance tasks.
Can
make eye-splice in rope and make common sailmakers whippings.
Knows
the properties and uses of common synthetic ropes
General
organisation
Can
make out a victualling list and supervise victualling organisation
afloat
Emergency
situations
Is
able to take correct action as helmsman for recovery of a man overboard.
Fully
understands use of flares and EPIRB
Knows
correct procedures for helicopter rescue
Boat
handling
Under
power can bring a boat safely to and from an alongside berth, mooring
buoy or anchor
Under
sail can bring a boat safely to and from a mooring buoy or anchor
Towing,
be able to accept a tow and steer and manoeuvre while being towed
Passage
planning
Can
plan a short passage on tidal/estuary waters, taking account of relevant
navigational hazards and limitations imposed by the type of boat and
strength of the crew
